Blackwell Publishing conducts a full range of marketing activities worldwide for the effective distribution of our books.

Author Promotion Form
When your manuscript has been accepted for publication and the contract has been signed, you will be sent an author promotion form (APF) from the Editorial Department. It is important that you return it, thoroughly completed, at the earliest opportunity. The author information form provides crucial information for writing news releases, direct mail, catalog listings, and jacket copy.

Basic Marketing Stages
We provide full marketing support for all of our titles. Broadly speaking, the program includes the traditional marketing outlets:

  • Publicity (news releases and review copies)

  • Direct mail

  • Exhibits at professional meeting

  • Sales representation worldwide

  • Sales of secondary right

Each book goes through three basic marketing stages to our national and international markets. Each stage is based on the official publication date of the book, which is four to six weeks after the printed book has arrived in our warehouse.

  • Pre-publication. A marketing plan is developed. Advance publicity is sent to bookstores, individuals, educators, and media. News releases are sent to journal and book reviewers. Secondary rights are explored. Seasonal catalogs are prepared and sales representatives are briefed on forthcoming titles.

  • Publication. Review copies are sent to journal and book reviewers.  Complimentary copies go to key persons and to our sales representatives.

  • Post-publication. Many of the above activities are continued, in addition to exhibits at local, national, and international conferences and meetings, and direct-mail and Web sales efforts. Non-traditional markets outside the standard book industry are explored as well.

We welcome author suggestions for our marketing program.
